Website Modernization for Nonprofits

Your website is often the first thing a potential donor, volunteer, or partner sees. If it’s slow, confusing, or visually outdated, it costs you credibility before you say a word. We fix that.

Not a redesign for its own sake — a rebuild aimed at the three things a nonprofit site has to do: load fast on a phone, be usable by everyone, and make the next step obvious.

When It Is Time

Four signs your site is costing you something

It is slow on a phone

Most of your traffic is mobile, and most nonprofit sites were designed on a desktop. If your homepage takes more than three seconds on a phone on ordinary data, a measurable share of visitors leave before seeing anything you wrote.

Staff cannot update it without help

If changing a service time or adding a board member requires a developer, the site goes stale — not because nobody cares, but because the cost of each edit is too high. Modernization usually means handing editing back to your team.

It is not accessible

Low-contrast text, missing alt text, and forms that cannot be completed with a keyboard exclude the people many nonprofits exist to serve. It is also a legal exposure that grows every year.

It does not ask for anything

A site can be attractive and still fail, because there is no obvious next step. Donate, volunteer, apply, get help — if a visitor cannot find the action in a few seconds, the design is decorative rather than useful.

Common Questions

Nonprofit website modernization, answered

How much does a nonprofit website cost?

Most nonprofit website modernization projects land in the $5,000–$15,000 range over 4–8 weeks, depending on page count, whether content needs rewriting, and how much integration is required with donation or CRM tools. Larger sites with custom functionality — portals, program directories, member areas — move into the custom application range. You get a fixed scope and price before work begins.

Do we have to rewrite all our content?

No, and you usually should not rewrite all of it. Most sites have a handful of pages doing real work and a long tail nobody visits. We look at your analytics first and focus effort on the pages that matter, carrying the rest over. Where content genuinely needs rewriting we will say so and scope it explicitly rather than quietly assume it.

Will we be able to edit the site ourselves afterwards?

Yes — that is a requirement, not an upsell. Your team gets training and documentation, and the editing experience is built for non-technical staff. A site your people cannot maintain is a site that will look outdated again in two years.

What about accessibility and WCAG compliance?

Accessibility is built in rather than bolted on: semantic markup, keyboard navigation, sufficient colour contrast, and alt text throughout. We aim at WCAG 2.1 AA as a baseline. For nonprofits this is both a legal consideration and a mission one — an inaccessible site excludes exactly the people you are trying to reach.

Do you work with churches?

Yes. Churches are a meaningful part of our practice, and church sites have particular needs — service times that must be correct, staff and ministry directories, and volunteer-proof editing that survives leadership transitions. See our guide to Google Workspace for churches for a sense of how we approach church technology.

We need more than a website — we need software. Is that the same project?

No, and it is worth separating them. A website tells your story to the public; custom software runs your operations. They are different budgets and different timelines. If you need both, we usually sequence the website first because it is faster and cheaper, then scope the software properly.

Need internal tools or integrations rather than a public site? See custom software development for nonprofits.
